Some Photographs Illustrating House Sparrow Habitat Destruction

houses with gardens gone

These houses in Hendon, London were demolished before I knew about it. Sometimes the first you know about houses being replaced is when a bulldozer is delivered and a fence goes up as the buildings and trees come crashing down.

flats with no gardens

6 family homes with gardens and wildlife have been replaced with these 24 apartments and a car park. The sewers will also suffer! The extra yearly Council Tax the local council can charge the new residents gives a great incentive to allow this sparrow habitat destruction to continue.

house losing its front garden

This front garden in Finchley, London had a fruiting cherry tree, privet hedge, lawn and flowerbeds. It's being destroyed to enable the householder to park their car on rather than pay the local council £35 a year to park outside their own home!!!

houses after paving laid

This is the finished result - the House sparrow habitat completely eradicated! Since the Controlled Parking Zones have been introduced in our Borough, more front gardens and hedges have been destroyed, tragically taking further habitat.

houses before demolition

These six homes in Hendon, London are due for demolition. I was lucky to get this photo as the next photo was taken just one week later.

houses during demolition

Not only were these houses gone, but the front gardens with hedges were torn away. The back gardens contained many fruit trees, lawns and usual garden plants and shrubs. The site remained empty for about a month before the builders moved in.
